Article: The-Colonel-s-Tale----Book-Review

The Colonel’s Tale - a Dassas Cormier Mystery, by S.H. Baker is the third book in this mystery series. 160 pages greet readers with an unsolved bank robbing incident and oil-greedy villains.

Centered in Marshall’s Bayou, Louisiana in 1924, where Dassas Cormier has taken the position of Chief of Police. This young man is of the restless sort, finding the relatively calm town of Marshall’s Bayou trying on his nerves. Frustrated with the recent job choice, Dassas feels his greatest highlight these days only came in the form of petty disagreements. That is, until Colonel Gilmore comes to town filling young minds with grand tales.

The story evolves around a family Thanksgiving holiday where, like most families, members travel in for the event. And, like most families, sibling disputes still exist.

A bank-robbing incident, witnessed by a family guest, is melded with a young woman who has gone missing. Side stories from true love conquering large obstacles to a marriage in tatters fill any potential gaps or slow areas in the storyline. Topped off with some greed over potential oil in the area, The Colonel’s Tale has a lot to offer readers.

Far from being a character of astounding ability, Dassas gets beaten up a lot and actually stumbles on clues – though his sharp mind and honed instincts help him along. Dassas’s haunting relationship with his ex-wife is still not healed, but readers can sense that he is ready to begin moving on.

Certainly the overall theme is one of love conquering all and highlighting the importance of family. The author shows readers how seeing through the eyes of another can quickly nullify disagreements and misconceptions.
